BAOBAB OIL

In South Africa, the Baobab and Marula are two of the most popular indigenous tree species used for seed oil production (Venter, 2012)..About 33% of the seed content is oil with oleic and linoleic acids as the major fatty acids followed by palmitic and α-linolenic acids. The high content of linoleic and oleic acids are known to soften the skin and to restore and moisturise the epidermis. In addition, the fatty acids regenerate epithelial tissues which renders the seed oil a very good carrier oil of value to the cosmetic industry (Glew et al., 1997Chindo et al., 2010).

Based on a 12 day trial:

The positive control caused expected irritation while Baobab oil caused no irritation

Baobab oil exhibited skin dryness recovery properties

Baobab oil was considered an excellent oil to improve skin barrier function by preventing reduced TEWL

Oat Oil

"Oat oil originates from Avena sativa. It consists of 36–46% linoleic and 28–40% oleic acid [135]. Oat in colloidal form is a centuries-old topical treatment for a variety of skin conditions, including skin rashes, erythema, burns, itch, and eczema. Although oleic acid may disrupt skin barrier [62,117], the high percentage (36–46%) of linoleic acid may contribute to the final effect of oat oil on barrier repair."

Results

The results of the clinical research showed that Oat Oil was highly beneficial for skin barrier repair with high anti-inflammatory properties.

PRICKLY PEAR OIL

"Opuntia ficus indica L. inermis (OFI) is used in traditional medicine pharmacopeia for its richness in natural bioactive compounds.

Results

The extracted oil has shown an interesting antimicrobial effect on Enterobacter cloacae, antiyeast effect against Candida parapsilosis and Candida sake, and antifungal activity against three opportunistic cutaneous molds (Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Fusarium). Moreover, OFI oil has shown a good wound healing effect. It prevents cutaneous infections and reduces the reepithelialization phase.

It has been proven to be effective in the improvement of the healing of laser-induced skin burns. The aim of the present study was to investigate the wound healing effect of OFI extracted oil on full-thickness skin wound."
